What is prayer?

According to scripture prayer means a request to God.

There are four kinds of request to God.
  1. Secret........Matthew 6:6
bullet"But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen.  Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."
  2. Family.......Acts 10:2, 30
bullet"He and all his family were devout and God-fearing; he gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly."

Cornelius answered:  "Four days ago I was in my house praying at this hour, at three in the afternoon.  Suddenly a man in shinning clothes stood before me and said, " Cornelius, God has heard your prayer and remembered your gifts to the poor."

  3. Group.........Matthew 18:20

bulletFor where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them."
  4. Public..........1 Corinthians 14:14-17

bullet"For if I pray in tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.  So what shall I do?  I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind.  If you are praising God with your spirit, how can one who finds himself among those who do not understand say "Amen" to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying?"

Why does God refuse some of our prayers?

  1.  Sin.............Psalms 66:18
bullet"If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened."
  2. Selfishness...James 4:3
bullet"When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures."
  3. Doubt............James 1:5-7
bullet"If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.  But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.   That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord."
  4. Disobedience.....Proverbs 28:9
bullet"If anyone turns a dead ear to the law, even his prayers are detestable."
  5. Inhumanity........Proverbs 21:13
bullet"If a man shuts his ears to the cry of the poor, he too will cry out and not be answered."
  6. Pride....................Luke 18:10-14
bullet"Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.  The Pharisee stood up  and  prayed about himself:  God, I thank you that I am not like other men...robbers, evildoers, adulterers or even like this tax collector.  I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get."

"But the tax collector stood at a distance.  He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, "God, have mercy on me, a sinner."

"I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God, for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."

Why Why pray for God's will to be done?

bullet

Matthew 6:10
bullet

Because when we do, we yield to God's authority, giving him permission to fulfill his best purposes in our lives.  It is a humble admission that he knows better than we what is right.  It also announces our intentions to obey him, so we will not obstruct his purposes or hinder the advancement of the kingdom of God.

How does God want us to pray?

bulletMatthew 6:5-13
bullet"And when we pray, do  not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men.  I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.  But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen.  The your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.  And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.  Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him."

This then, is how you should pray:

"Our Father in heaven hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one."
